Inspiration It starts with the colors of nature – fiber, metal, stone, ceramic, glass. It starts with the colors of the patina, the stone, the bead. It starts with the idea of integration – soft and hard, fiber and metal.
Planning Play with the copper – hammer, solder, fold, patina, torch. See what naturally happens. Find that stone, glass, or ceramic with a unique pattern and color. Ideas are sketched. Work out the idea in my head. Consider the techniques needed to knot the fiber. Solve the problems. The design evolves. Choose the colors. Do the math. Measure the threads.
Execution Manage the threads – five feet long. Neat tight even glistening knot, after knot, after knot. If it is not right, stop and fix. Change the design, allow the design to evolve. Threads have a mind of their own. Patience. Measure. Persistence. Knot after knot. The combination of the organic, spontaneous results of the copper with the precision and accuracy of the knotting creates unique items of jewelry. Fiber and metal have become one.
